Wirehaired Pointing Griffon
The Wirehaired Pointing Griffon, also called the Korthals Griffon, was created in France hunt various types of game. Today, the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon is used as both a companion dog and hunting dog.
History: This breed owes its existence to a Dutchman named Edward Korthals who started in 1870 with a Barbet dog and mixed her bloodlines with various setters, spaniels and pointers to create a new sporting dog. A family feud forced him to leave Holland and continue his breeding experiments in Germany and France. The breed type was fixed by the beginning of the twentieth century and the dog exhibited the skills of both a pointer and a retriever. Its harsh coat and swimming abilities enabled it to be utilized for both water and field work.
Appearance: The wirehaired pointing griffon is a medium-sized dog that is longer than it is tall with a square-shaped head. The neck is rather long, without dewlap and the skull is the same length from the stop to occiput, as from nose to stop. They have high set ears, which lie close to the head and brown nose with wide-open nostrils. The eyes are large and elliptical with brown or yellow irises. The Wirehaired Pointing Griffon is a rough, double coat breed. The outer coat is wiry, straight, hard, and provides protection from harsh weather and dense brush. The under coat is thick and soft. Permissible colors are solid chestnut; steel-gray, gray-white, or dirty white with or without chestnut splashes. The solid chestnut is not desirable and solid black is a disqualification.
Size: Height:   20-24 inches (50-60 cm)
Weight:  50-60 (23-27 kg)
Temperament: The Wirehaired Pointing Griffon is a skilled field dog. Energetic, loving and intelligent. It is a superior gundog and tracker, and an excellent hunting companion. The Griffon has a quick and intelligent mind and is easily trained. He is outgoing, shows a tremendous willingness to please and is trustworthy. A lively and agile breed, the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon is deeply devoted and affectionate to their family. They are extremely people oriented and do well with considerate children. Lively and active, the breed works well in marshland and upland, and is a fine pointer, flusher and water retriever. It is very trustworthy, even to strangers, other dogs and small animals. Socialize extensively when young to maximize this tendency. This breed is an excellent watchdog.
Health: It is a very healthy breed. Still, some are prone to hip dysplasia, entropian. Thyroid may lead to skin allergies.
Life expectancy: 10 – 14 years
Grooming: This breed is highly active, requiring daily exercise such as jogging, swimming, or fast-paced games. Its coat requires combing several times a week and trimming when it grows unruly. Also, its ears require cleaning and removal of the hair within the canal as a preventative measure.
