Saint Bernard
The Saint Bernard, also known as the Alpine Mastiff, is a native of Switzerland. In hopes of keeping the rescue reputation of this breed, the Bernadine Monks have raised Saint Bernards for rescue and draft work since the 1600s. Today the Saint Bernard is used mainly as a companion dog.
History: This is a very ancient breed. It was founded in AD 980 by St Bernard de Menthon as a refuge for travelers through the perilous Alpine pass between Switzerland and Italy. It is descended from the Tibetan mastiff and therefore must have originated with the mastiff brought to the Alps by the Romans around the year 1000. Its use and popularity as a rescue dog began in the middle of the seventeenth century. The Saint Bernard was used as an avalanche and rescue dog in the snowy passes near the Hospice. By 1900, the Saint Bernard had gained popularity and is still one of the most popular of the giant breeds.
Appearance: Powerful, proportionately tall figure, strong and muscular in every part, with powerful head and most intelligent expression. In dogs with a dark mask the expression appears more stern, but never ill-natured. Their muzzle is short and wide showing the flews on the lower jaw. Saint Bernards have a huge head with wrinkles above the eyes that are more visible when the dog is alert. The Saint Bernard breed has two different coat varieties: the smooth or shorthaired, and the rough or longhaired. Both varieties of coat are extremely dense in texture and are water resistant. Permissible colors are red with white markings, or white with red markings or brindle patches on a white ground. The Saint Bernard can never be of a solid color without white.
Size: Height: 25.5-27.5 inches ( 61-70 cm)
Weight: 110-200 pounds (50-91 kg)
Temperament: The Saint Bernard is slow moving, patient, and obedient. Extremely loyal, this breed wants to please. Although not particularly playful, it is good with children and animals. They have a protective instinct for their family and make excellent watchdogs. They are sensible and loving and make a great family pet. They may display stubbornness, so owners must be very patient. Since this dog is so giant, be sure to socialize it very well at a young age with other people. It is highly intelligent and easy to train, however training should begin early, while the dog is still a manageable size.
Health: Watch for bloat, hip dysplasia, epilepsy, heart problems, skin problems. Twisted stomachs should be watched for.
Life expectancy: 8 – 10 years
Grooming: Both types of coats are easy to groom. The Saint Bernard requires a weekly brushing, with more grooming during its twice yearly shedding. Bathe when necessary with a mild soap, paying extra attention to its eyes. This breed is known to drool excessively.
Puppy price: $300.00 - $2.500.00
