Pembroke Welsh Corgi
The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is one of two dog breeds known as Welsh Corgis that originated in Pembrokeshire, Wales.
History: The Pembroke and the Cardigan Welsh Corgis have been considered separate breeds for only about 70 years. There are several theories about the origins of the Welsh Corgi. Both Corgi varieties may be descended from Swedish Vallhunds brought to Wales by Vikings in the 800’s. Even though both breeds were interbred up until the 1930s, they definitely have separate roots. The Pembroke’s ancestors were introduced by Flemish weavers in the 1100s and developed in Pembrokeshire, Wales. Originally bred for herding sheep and cattle, they have proven themselves as excellent companion animals and are outstanding competitors in sheepdog trials and dog agility.
Appearance: The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is low-set, strong, sturdily built and active, giving an impression of substance and stamina in a small space. The head should be foxy in shape and appearance. The Pembroke’s eyes are dark, preferably with black rims, and the nose is black. The ears are erect, firm, and of medium size, tapering slightly to a rounded point. Ears are mobile, and react sensitively to sounds. The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is a double coat breed. The outer coat is of medium length, straight, and coarse in texture. The under coat is thick, short, and weather resistant. The coat is more profuse around the neck, on the shoulders, and on the chest. Its outer coat is coarse, long and straight in Red, sable, fawn, or black and tan sometimes with white markings on its legs.

They are outgoing, friendly, and thrive on human companionship and attention. This breed is alert, fearless, and assertive. It barks a lot and makes a good watchdog. It is suspicious around strangers and must be trained as a puppy to prevent behavior that is domineering and controlling. Wary of strangers, it should be properly socialized and trained when it is still young - to avoid over-protective behavior as an adult. The Pembroke Welsh corgi is patient with kids as long as they know how to treat pets.
