The Siamese is one of the first distinctly recognised breeds of Oriental cat. In the twentieth century the cats became one of the most popular breeds in Europe and North America.
History: Once known as the “Royal Cats of Siam”, the beautiful and fascinating Siamese cat was once found only in the Royal households and Temples of Siam. In 1884, the King of Siam presented 2 Siamese Cats to the British Consul General in Bangkok. Siamese cats can now be found throughout Europe, Asia and North America.
Appearance: The ideal Siamese is a medium sized, svelte, refined cat with long tapering lines, very lithe but muscular. Males may be proportionately larger. The long Siamese head is delineated by an absolutely straight profile and well aligned chin. The large ears are wide at the base and pointed. The legs are long and slender with small paws. The Siamese cats are considered to be a shorthair cat breed. The coat is short, glossy and fine in texture. All Siamese cats share the colorpoint pattern, where the cooler body parts (feet, tail, and face) are of a darker color than the rest of the body. The different colors accepted by all cat fancy associations are seal (dark brown), chocolate, blue, and lilac (light gray with a pink tinge).
Size: Weight – male: 11-15 lb
female: 8-12 lb
Temperament: Siamese are affectionate and intelligent cats, far-famed for their social nature. They enjoy being with people and are sometimes described as “extroverts”. Siamese cats are very intelligent and inquisitive and are known for their unique vocalizations, which many people have compared to the sound of a baby crying, as well as for their tendency to explore every nook and cranny of their homes. They also have a great need for human companionship. Often they bond strongly to a single person. These cats are generally playful and active, even as adults. This ancient breed is able to communicate like no other. The Siamese voice is legendary. They speak both with their voice and with their body. They are the quintessential “people” cat, for they love to be in your lap, on your bed, at your table–and in your heart!
Health: This breed has several distinctive genetic faults, all of which are cosmetic and require no medical treatment. These include crossed eyes and a kinked tail. These faults are becoming more rare with time as breeders try to breed them out. Nevertheless, from the age of about eight years it is advisable for them to have an annual health check to check teeth and liver and kidney function.
Life expectancy: over 15 years
Grooming: Siamese cats need relatively little grooming. Their close-lying coat can do with a gentle brushing just once a week to remove dead hair.
Kitten price: $200.00 - $500.00
