Welsh Terrier
The Welsh Terrier is a breed of dog, one of many terrier breeds. It is suited for hunting fox, birds, and badgers and for being kept as a pet.
History: The recorded history of the Welsh Terrier goes back to the 1500’s. By the 1700’s it was customarily used with fox hunting packs in the northern part of Wales. The long legged terrier was able to keep up with the horses but was still small enough to go after fox or badger below the ground. Show classes were offered for the Welsh Terrier at English shows in the 1880’s. By 1901 there were enough of the breed in America to offer classes for them at American Kennel Club shows
Appearance: The Welsh Terrier is a sturdy, compact, rugged dog of medium size. The head is long, flat and rectangular, with bushy eyebrows, mustache and beard. The Muzzle is squared at the end, never pointed and is somewhat deeper than that of the Fox Terriers. The eyes are small, dark brown and almond-shaped, well set in the skull. They are placed fairly far apart. The v-shaped ears fold forward. The Welsh Terrier has a very short coat. It is dense, hard, and wiry. The coat should always be close and abundant on this breed. The preferred color is black and tan but black, grizzle and tan is also permitted.
Size: Height:  Maximum allowed: 15 (39cm)
Weight: 20-21 pounds (9-9Ѕkg)
Temperament: The Welsh Terrier is a vigilant, active, cheerful and uncomplicated dog, which is affectionate and intelligent. The Welsh Terrier has a great sense of humor and makes a good child’s companion, given the child knows how to properly handle a dog with this level of energy. This terrier has a desire to please, but its curiosity and independence make for some mischief. This breed enjoys swimming, digging, and playing, and also may bark. It is active and intrepid and not eager to fight, although it will hold its own when necessary. The Welshie needs a lot of intellectual stimulation to stay agreeable. A small yard to walk all day long, without any other activities, is not enough. These dogs need interesting things to do each day. It could be shy around strangers, but prone to fight with other pets and strange dogs.
Health: This breed is generally hardy. Nevertheless, watch for lens luxation, epilepsy, glaucoma, hypothyroidism, allergies.
Life expectancy: 10 – 14 years
Grooming: This breed is a so-called trimming breed; it has abrasive hair that has to be trimmed—not cut! However, it does not shed its fur as many other dog breeds do. This dog does not need constant bathing. The fur must be trimmed about every third month. A complete trimming takes three to four hours and the breeder should give tip about where the dog can get trimmed by a professional (in the correct way so that the fur is not destroyed).
Puppy price: $400.00 - $800.00
