Tibetan Spaniel
The Tibetan Spaniel is a breed of small, intelligent dogs originating in the Himalayan mountains of Tibet. This breed is not a true Spaniel; its breeding and role differs quite a bit (Spaniels are gun dogs.)
History: This breed originated in Tibet. It is believed that in its veins runs the blood of the Pekingese, the Pug, and the Japanese Spaniel (Chin). These dogs were prized in ancient Tibet, and were often given as gifts to royal houses. The Tibetan Spaniel first was brought to England in the late 1800’s. The breed received official AKC recognition in 1984.
Appearance: The Tibetan Spaniel should be small, active and alert. The outline should give a well balanced appearance, slightly longer in body than the height at withers. The top of the head is slightly rounded, and the medium-length muzzle is blunt and strong. Its ears are decorated with long tufts of fur, and its eyes are set apart giving it an “apelike” expression. The Tibetan Spaniel is a double coat breed. The outer coat is of medium length and is silky, soft, and flat. The under coat is dense and soft in texture and provides warmth as well as protection from the sun. They have feathering on the tail, ears, and backs of legs. There is a longer mane of hair at the neck. All colors and mixtures of colors are acceptable.
Size: Height:  10 inches (51cm)
Weight:  9-15 pounds (4.1-6.8)
Temperament: The Tibetan Spaniel is perky, happy, very smart, and trusting. They are sweet and protective with their family, especially children. This breed is generally aloof with strangers but is never aggressive. They get along very well with other pets. The Tibetan Spaniel will vigorously alert their family to any unusual event, sound, or to visitors. They are excellent watchdogs that are neither nervous nor hyper. These dogs can be slightly difficult to train. The female Tibetan Spaniel tends to come into heat only once a year.
Health: The Tibetan Spaniels are prone to a myriad of health issues such as PRA, weeping eye, cherry eye, allergies, low tolerance to anesthesia, and hip and elbow dysplasia.
Life expectancy: The Tibetan Spaniel is slow to mature and lives a long time - about 12-15 years.
Grooming: The Tibetan spaniel has a long silky coat that requires extra grooming to keep it free from matting. Brush and comb at least twice weekly and bathe only when necessary. The hair needs to be trimmed between its pads on its feet and extra care needs to be taken during its seasonal shedding, when its coat will come out in clumps. Additional maintenance includes trimming nails and cleaning its ears and teeth.
Puppy price: $250.00 - $900.00
