Standard Schnauzer
The Standard Schnauzer is the original breed of the three sizes of Schnauzer, although it is sometimes classified as a terrier. The breed is a handsome, robust, squarely built, medium-sized dog with aristocratic bearing, making it a popular subject of painters Albrecht D?rer and Rembrandt.
History: The standard schnauzer was the prototype and oldest of the three breeds – the miniature, standard, and giant. Evidence of the breed extends as far back as the 14 th century. Many paintings of the 15 th and 16 th centuries depict this breed in family portraits, revealing its position as a pet and companion. The schnauzer is a blend of both working and hunting terriers, crossed with wirehaired pinschers, black German poodles and gray wolf spitz. The standard schnauzer was first exhibited as a wire-haired pinscher in the Third German International Show at Hanover in 1879. The end of World War II brought more public attention to this breed, and the Schnauzer Club of America was formed in 1925.
Appearance: The Standard Schnauzer is a robust, heavy-set dog, sturdily built with good muscle and plenty of bone; square-built in proportion of body length to height. The head is long and rectangular, with a strong muzzle and a pronounced stop. The nose is black and the eyes are oval and dark brown. The teeth should form a scissors bite. The eyes are of medium size; dark brown; oval in shape and turned forward; neither round nor protruding. The Standard Schnauzer has a harsh, wiry outer coat with minimal shedding that is salt and pepper or solid black in color.
Size: Height: dogs 18-20 inches (46-51 cm); bitches - 17-19 inches (43-48 cm)
Weight: dogs 30-45 pounds (14-20 kg); bitches - 30-40 pounds (14-18 kg)
Ideally, the height should be the same as the length, resulting in a rather square impression.
Temperament: The Standard Schnauzer is a fearless and protective dog. Nevertheless, it is a lively and high-spirited and affectionate. The standard schnauzer is an active breed that is friendly and playful. It is highly intelligent resulting in a personality that can be stubborn and mischievous. They are noted for guarding the family home and for displaying devotion to their immediate family. It is great with children and other pets, although it can be aggressive toward strange dogs or other animals. They should be socialized well when they are young to prevent over-protectiveness later in life.
Health: This is generally a very healthy breed. Still, watch for hip dysplasia, allergies.
Life expectancy: 12 – 14 years
Grooming: The standard schnauzer has a harsh coat that needs combing twice a week, paying special attention to the leg and beard hair, which tends to mat. Professional grooming and shaping should be done every season as well. Trim around the eyes and ears as needed, and clean its long whiskers after meals.
Puppy price: $350.00 - $600.00
