Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier
The Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier is a breed of dog that originated in Ireland. There are four coat varieties, Traditional Irish, Heavy Irish, English, and American.
History: The soft-coated Wheaten terrier is one of the three large terriers originating in Ireland. For hundreds of years, it performed farm work such as killing vermin, rounding up cattle and sheep, and guarding the house and property. It was later trained to hunt game and be a water retriever. It is believed to have been crossed with the Kerry blue terrier. Compared with other breeds, it is bit of a late-bloomer, having only gained breed status in Ireland in 1937. The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier was first imported to the United States in 1946 and officially recognized by the AKC in 1973.
Appearance: The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier is a medium-sized, hardy, well balanced sporting terrier, square in outline. The head is shaped like a rectangle, rather long, with a short, strong muzzle, jaws that are able to seize and grip prey well, and large teeth. The eyes are dark reddish brown or brown, medium in size, slightly almond shaped and set fairly wide apart. The ears small to medium in size, breaking level with the skull and dropping slightly forward. The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier’s coat is this breeds’ most distinguishing feature. It is medium long, abundant, soft, silky, and slightly wavy. Although they are a single coat breed, their hair continuously grows and provides insulation and protection. The color can range from wheat to white, but white coats are not considered desirable by breeders and show enthusiasts. The adult coat may contain black, white, or darker brown “guard” hairs in addition to the lighter wheaten-coloured hair.
Size: Height: dogs - 18-20 inches (46-51 cm); bitches 17-19 inches (43-48 cm)
Weight: dogs - 35-45 pounds (16-20 kg); bitches 30-40 pounds (14-18 kg)
Temperament: The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier is an alert and happy animal - graceful, strong and well-coordinated. A playful and friendly terrier. They are self-confident, easy-going, and deeply devoted to their family. They get along well with older children and with dogs they have been raised with. This breed is not suitable for homes with cats or other small household pets. It can be vocal, making it a good watch dog although no one should consider this breed to deter burglars as the dog will greet the burglar as a friend. His temperament should be such that he considers a stranger a friend he hasn’t met yet. The Soft Coated Wheaten should be well socialized with other dogs while they are young puppies.
Health: They, like almost all dog breeds, are prone to some genetic disorders, particularly protein-losing enteropathy and protein-losing nephropathy. Renal dysplasia has also been reported, especially in Europe. Hip dysplasia and Progressive retinal atrophy are occasionally seen.
Life expectancy: About 12-15 years.
Grooming: This is a high maintenance breed that requires daily combing to prevent mats and tangles. Professional trimming is needed four to six times per year. Bathing or dry shampooing should be done when necessary. It is important to clean and check the eyes and ears on a consistent basis.
Puppy price: $200.00 - $1.000.00
