The Smooth Fox Terrier is a breed of dog, one of many terrier breeds. This stealthy killing terrier is stalwart in temperament and willful. They require a gentle but firm owner and prefer to be the only dog in a household.
History: In developing the Terriers we know today breeders crossed ancient Dachshunds, the English Hound, and later the Fox Hound and Beagle. One of the oldest Terriers, the Fox Terrier was used in the 18th century to hunt foxes in England. Its job was to harass fox out of its hole. The first standard for the Smooth Fox Terrier was established in 1876. The Wirehaired and Smooth Fox Terriers are sometimes regarded as the same breed, although the breed has been separated in the United States since 1984.
Appearance: The Smooth Fox Terrier is a small muscular breed of square proportion. It has a short back, narrow head, and strong jaw. The breed has a flat, tapering, narrow skull, and ears that fold forward making “V” shaped flaps. The tail is normally docked to 1/4 its length and stands on top of the dog rather than hanging out behind. The coat of the Smooth Fox Terrier is dense, short, flat, and smooth. It is also quite abundant and covers not only the entire body, but the stomach and underside of the thighs as well. White must be the predominate color so the terrier can be seen and distinguished during the hunt from a fox or badger. Markings are black, tan, or ginger.
Size: Height: dogs - 14-16 inches (36-41 cm); bitches - 13-15 inches (33-38 cm)
Weight: dogs - 15-20 pounds (7-9 kg); bitches - 13-18 pounds (6-8 kg)
Temperament: The Smooth Fox Terrier is a bold and energetic Terrier. They are enthusiastically playful especially with children, but have been known to bite. They are affectionate with the family and do not hide their jealously. Because this is an intelligent and active breed, they must be kept exercised, and interested, and a part of the family. They have well-developed hunting instincts. Known to be determined and impulsive, this breed will kill birds and small animals if given the opportunity. It considers cats to be prey and may try to dominate other dogs. It is fairly reserved with strangers and is totally devoted to its family, making it an excellent watchdog.
Health: Health problems to be aware of include epilepsy, cataracts, Legg-Perthes, deafness, lens luxation, distichiasis, and shoulder dislocation.
Life expectancy: 10 – 13 years
Grooming: The Smooth Fox Terrier is easy to groom, requiring regular brushing with a firm bristle brush and professional stripping of the coat twice a year. More care is needed during their twice yearly shedding. Bathing or dry shampooing should be done when necessary.
