Shiba Inu
This intelligent and sweet-natured Spitz has long been a favorite of the Japanese people. They make excellent guard dogs and are very quiet in mannerism around the home.
History: Shiba Inu - The oldest and smallest breed of the Japanese dogs, the shiba inu dates back to the third century B.C. “Shiba” may mean small, but it also could refer to the red brushwood trees that filled the hunting grounds. The word “Inu” means “dog.” World War II was a difficult time for many dog breeds worldwide, and the Shiba was not an exception. Though the breed almost become extinct, breeding programs were established after the war, using individuals from the countryside. In 1954, an armed service family brought the first shiba inu to America. In the 1979, the first litter of shibas was born in the United States to a pair owned by Julia Cadwell.
Appearance: The Shiba is a small, compact, agile furry dog that looks like a miniature Akita. It has small upright ears, thick fur, and a curled tail. The eyes are somewhat triangular in shape, deep set, and upward slanting toward the outside base of the ear. The Shiba Inu has a thick double coat. Outercoat should remain stiff and straight. The undercoat should be soft and thick. This breed has bushy hair on its tail and its hind legs.  Shibas may be red, black and tan, or red with black-tipped hairs, with a cream, buff, or grey undercoat. They may also be creamy white or pinto, though this colour is not allowed in the show ring as the markings known as “urajiro” (literally “back white”) are unable to be seen.
Size: Height: dogs - 14-16 inches (36-41 cm); bitches - 13-15 inches (33-38 cm)
Weight: dogs - 20-30 pounds (9-14 kg); bitches - 18-28 pounds (8-13 kg)
Temperament: The Shiba is an alert, lively and bold dog. Independent, but affectionate and loving. Kind, trainable, brave and clean. Confident, fearless and courageous. It is intelligent and active – always ready for a good adventure. The shiba may appear aloof at first, however it is a good-natured breed that is affectionate and loyal to its loved ones. It can be reserved with strangers, at least initially. Some Shibas have difficulty socializing with other dogs, displaying aggressive tendencies towards dogs of both sexes. This breed guards its territory and makes an excellent watchdog.
Health: This breed is generally hardy and healthy with few genetic weaknesses. A small proportion of Shibas have histories of hip dysplasia and PRA. Some lines are prone to patellar luxation (slipped kneecap).
Life expectancy: 12 – 15 years
Grooming: The Shiba Inu requires brushing with a bristle brush several times a week, more so when shedding. Since their double coats are naturally waterproof, it only needs a bath when necessary.
Puppy price: $200.00 - $900.00
