Schipperke
A Schipperke is a small Belgian breed of dog that originated in the early 16th century.. There has been a long debate over whether this type of dog is a terrier, spitz or miniature sheepdog. The Schipperke is an agile, active watchdog and hunter of vermin.
History: The Schipperke was bred in Flanders by a canal boat captain named Renssens. Thought to be descended from the same sheep-herding stock as the black Belgian Sheepdog, the Schipperke was bred smaller and smaller and eventually became a different breed entirely. The breed became very popular in Belgian households by the late 1800’s. It first appeared at a dog show in 1880. From that point on it was exported throughout the world.
Appearance: In appearance he is a small, thickset, cobby, black, tailless dog, with a fox-like face. The dog is square in profile and possesses a distinctive coat, which includes a stand-out ruff, cape and culottes. The skull is of medium width, narrowing toward the muzzle. If born with a tail, it is docked in keeping with the standard. The breed has triangular ears that stand upright. Its fox-like face appears questioning and mischievous. Slightly harsh and straight, the Schipperke has a distinct ruff around the neck. Thick double coat should be harsh to the touch while Undercoat should be soft and dense giving the appearance of a mane. In color the Schipperke is solid black, which is the only color accepted by the AKC, however, the breed also comes in a handsome range of tans and fawns which are acceptable abroad.
Size: Height: 10-13 inches (21-33cm)
Weight: 12-18 pounds (5.5-8 kg)
Temperament: The Schipperke are quick, energetic little dogs. This is a big dog in a little dog’s body. Hot-tempered, high-spirited, self-confident and protective. This dog will protect his home and family from intruders. Does great in a home with children, but should be socialized as a pup around other animals as they can be territorial. This breed is self-confident and alert, making it a great watchdog. It is reserved with strangers and will stand its ground. It likes to howl and bark, and enjoys playing with other dogs regardless of size. Schipperkes are a good choice for a boat dog.
Health: Watch for cataracts, PRA, diabetes, hip dysplasia, epilepsy, hypothyroidism, legg-perthes, entropian.
Life expectancy: About 15 or more years.
Grooming: The schipperke usually grooms itself, however its owner will need to provide regular brushing with a bristle brush and dry shampooing when necessary. This breed sometimes “blows” its coat, which means it sheds its entire undercoat in a short period of time. Professional grooming will help alleviate the excessive hair loss. It will take 2-3 months for the hair to grow back completely.
Puppy price: $300.00 - $800.00
