The Rhodesian Ridgeback, also known as the African Lion Hound, was created in South Africa as a farm dog who would hunt and guard livestock. Today, the Ridgeback is used mainly as a companion dog.
History: The breed’s long history dates back to early in the 17th century. The Rhodesian Ridgeback resulted from crosses between ridgebacked dogs originally kept by native tribes in South Africa and other breeds, such as the Khoikhoi dog, Mastiff, Deerhound and some breeds that are not known. The new breed was first seen in England in the 1930s with the introduction into America coming shortly thereafter. They were popular in both countries, and by the 1950s had developed a following. By the 1980s, the breed had been accepted as a sighthound and was thus eligible to participate in field trials.
Appearance: The Ridgeback represents a strong, muscular and active dog, symmetrical and balanced in outline. A mature Ridgeback is a handsome, upstanding and athletic dog, capable of great endurance with a fair (good) amount of speed. The skull of this dog is flat and somewhat broad. Their muzzle is long with thin lips and a strong jaw. They have round eyes, which are set far apart on the head, as are their medium sized ears. The Rhodesian Ridgeback has a very distinct marking along his back, which is created by hair that grows in the opposite direction. Coat is short, dense, and should remain glossy and sleek. Silky coat not desired. Color is always that of a lion: red or red wheaten.

They are intelligent, cunning but straight-forward dogs that are loyal to the family, have something of a mind of their own. They are brave and vigilant. It is extremely loyal and obedient though somewhat reserved with strangers. It is courageous and makes a great guard dog. It can become domineering and willful if not trained properly.

Dermoid sinus is a congenital condition that is known to affect this breed. It is discovered at birth, and these puppies may be culled.
