Redbone Coonhound
The Redbone Coonhound is a breed of dog bred to hunt raccoon. They are also widely used for hunting bear and cougar. Their agility allows them to be hunted from swamplands to mountains. The Redbone Coonhound is the only solid colored coonhound.
History: The Redbone Coonhound is an American breed. It was developed in Georgia in the 1800s from Foxhounds and Bloodhounds. The first dogs were commonly called “Saddlebacks.” The background color was red, and most of them possessed black saddle markings. By selective breeding, the black saddle was bred out and the solid red dogs became known as Redbone Coonhounds. Sadly, like many American hunting dogs, especially those from the South, they were widely known and loved by hunters and farmers, but totally unknown in the show ring. Recently, this has changed, and the Redbone has found recognition by the two major American kennel clubs.
Appearance: The Redbone Coonhound is a handsome, robust and strong coonhound. Their thin legs sit atop their small, compact feet with well-padded toes. The skull of this dog is flat with a square muzzle, large nose with open nostrils and tight-lipped mouth. They have a broad chest, thin but muscular bodyline and thick, medium length tail. Their round eyes are various shades of brown with very long, low set ears. The coat is short and smooth against the body, but coarse enough to provide protection to the skin while hunting through brush. Coat colors include red, and red with a little white. Although some Redbones might have traces of white on their feet or chest, this friendly, elegant dog is the only solid-colored Coonhound.
Size: Height: 21-27 inches (53-66 cm)
Weight: 50-70 pounds (23-32 kg)
Temperament: The Redbone Coonhound is happy, even-tempered and very good with children. It can be surprisingly affectionate and has a pleasant-sounding bark. They love being with their people. They are very intelligent and learn quickly. Their keen sense of smell tends to sidetrack their attention so training should occur as early as possible. Because of their noses, these dogs should not be walked off leash either. Like many hunting dogs, they have an independent intelligence especially well suited for problem solving. This can be an issue if the problem they want to solve is their backyard fence or the dog-proof garbage. But they also are pretty unflappable, able to take anything that comes at them.
Health: The Redbone Coonhound is a hardy breed that has few known diseases. The most common are hip dysplasia and obesity.
Life expectancy: About 11-12 years.
Grooming: An occasional brushing will due. This breed is a light shedder.
Puppy price: $200.00 - $500.00
