The Pointer, also known as the English Pointer, was created in Great Britain to help the hunters out. Today, the Pointer is mainly used as a companion dog but is also a gun dog.
History: The pointer’s ancestry is unclear, however the breed most likely arose out of the best field dogs of the time including the Italian or Spanish pointer, the foxhound, the bloodhound, the greyhound, the Newfoundland, the setter, and the bulldog. It is the most popular pointing dog in the world. It has an incredible nose and the speed and endurance to cover large areas of ground. The Pointer is especially suited to the hunting conditions of the United States where it is hunted from horseback.
Appearance: The pointer is graceful and athletic with a muscular body and proud stature. Its expression is alert and its gait is powerful with endless stamina. The skull of medium width, approximately as wide as the length of the muzzle, resulting in an impression of length rather than width. The stop is well-defined. Its upper lip is full but not slack. The eyes are hazel or chestnut depending on the color of the coat. The ears are set on at eye level. When hanging naturally, they should reach just below the lower jaw, close to the head, with little or no folding. They should be somewhat pointed at the tip–never round–and soft and thin in leather. The Pointer has a very short coat, which makes grooming a breeze. The coat should remain short, dense and smooth. The coat should also have a shiny appearance. Permissible colors are liver, lemon, black, and orange either in combination with white or solid-colored. Solid color pointers are rarely seen.
Size: Height: Dogs - 22-24 inches (55-62cm); bitches 21-24 inches (54-60cm)

Temperament: The English Pointer is full of energy and go-power. Loyal and devoted he is a true friend. A very even-tempered and alert dog that generally loves to be around people. This dog makes a wonderful companion, but is not recommended for the average home. They are intelligent, quick learners, and love to please. Because of their active nature, training should begin early. They tend to be a bit willful, distractible and reserved with strangers. It will bark at suspicious noises, but it is not a watchdog. These fairly independent dogs are generally good with other pets and are not usually dog-aggressive.
Health: Prone to hip dysplasia, thyroid, dwarfism, seizures, and allergies. Also skin conditions.
Life expectancy: 12 – 15 years
Grooming: Firm bristle brushing occasionally will suffice for this very easy to groom breed. The Pointer generally only needs to be bathed once every six months as they are fairly clean. Average shedding, a wipe with a dry towel or a rubber brush will remove much of the loose hair.
