The Plott Hound is a large scent hound, specifically a coonhound, originally bred for hunting boar.
History: The Plott Hound breed originated in the mountains of North Carolina around 1750 and is the only breed known to have originated in this State. Named for Jonathan Plott who developed the breed as a wild boar hound and bear hound, the Plott Hound is a legendary hunting dog known as a courageous fighter and tenacious tracker.
Appearance: The Plott Hound is a medium-sized, muscular dog that is soundly put-together. Noted for stamina, endurance, agility, determination and aggressiveness when hunting, the powerful, well muscled, yet streamlined Plott combines courage with athletic ability. The strong feet have webbed toes. The skull of the Plott is somewhat round with a flat area between the eyes, which sit high atop the head. The head is carried well up with skin fitting moderately tight. The muzzle is of moderate length, flews give it a squarish appearance. It has a long, high-held tail when the dog is alert. The eyes are brown or hazel, prominent rather than deeply set. The large, long ears are characteristic of the breed. The coat is smooth, dense, hard, and fairly fine in texture. The colour is almost any shade of brindle. Small white patches are permissible on the feet and chest.
Size: Height: 20-24 inches (51-61 cm)
Weight: 45-55 pounds (20-25 kg)
Temperament: The breed’s “all-in-the-family” background makes it a fine companion. Loyal and intelligent, the Plott Hound is quick to learn and quick to love and is good with children. Though they learn quickly, their noses sometimes get the better of them so training is encouraged at a young age. They are aggressive, bold, and fearless hunter. Disposition generally even, but varies among strains, with a distinction sometimes appearing between those bred for big game and those bred as coonhounds. Socialize this breed at an early age and be sure to teach it simple obedience like walking on a leash.
Health: The Plott Hound is considered the hardiest of the coonhounds. It eats large quantities of food quickly, which makes it susceptible to gastric torsion and life-threatening twisting of the stomach. Do not exercise this dog after a big meal.
Life expectancy: About 12-14 years.
Grooming: The short coat of the Plott Hound is easy to groom. Comb and brush occasionally to remove the dead hair. Check the ears often to make sure they are clean and infection free. After hunting they should be checked for torn nails, split pads on their feet, torn ears, and fleas and ticks.
