The Pharaoh Hound ( Kelb Tal-Fenek) is a breed of dog, a hound which has been classed variously as a member of the sighthound and pariah groups. It is the national dog of Malta, where it is called the Kelb-tal Fenek (plural: Klieb-tal Fenek), meaning “rabbit hound”.
History: Believed to have originated in Ancient Egypt, it used sight, sound and smell to track down small game. The traceable history of the Pharaoh Hounds, however, lies in Malta where they are used for rabbit hunting. The pharaoh hound was recognized as Malta’s national dog in 1974. It was first imported to the United Kingdom in the 1920s, but did not become popular until the 1960s when it was also imported to America. The pharaoh hound was recognized by the AKC in 1983.
Appearance: General Appearance is one of grace, power and speed. The Pharaoh Hound is medium sized, of noble bearing with hard clean-cut lines-graceful, well balanced, very fast with free easy movement and alert expression. The head is wedge-shaped and chiseled. The flat skull and muzzle are long and slim. The ears are large and upright that move to listen for animals during the hunt. Eyes are amber colored, blending with coat; oval, moderately deep set with keen intelligent expression. This beautiful and athletic breed has a short coat that doesn’t need much grooming. The coat is short and glossy lying close to the body of the dog. The Pharaoh Hound is weather resistant to a degree. Color is always tan. A large white patch on the chest called “star” is desirable. White markings are permitted on the feet and tail tip.
Size: Height: dogs - 23-25 inches (59-63 cm); bitches 21-24 inches (53-61 cm)
Weight: 45-55 pounds (20-25 kg)
Temperament: The Pharaoh Hound is reasonably independent and a most pleasant companion dog. It is peaceful in the house, loves to play, is calm, loyal, brave and loving. It loves to give chase and is a great hunter by both sight and scent. It is not a demonstrative breed and is quietly affectionate. They are a vocal breed without being yappy or barking just for the sake of barking. They make good watch dogs, however, they are not well suited as guard dogs as they are rarely aggressive with people.
Health: The Pharaoh Hound is considered to be one of the most healthy breeds. But beware, it can be highly sensitive to insecticides and medicines.
Life expectancy: 11 – 14 years
Grooming: Rubber brushing for the Pharaoh Hound is fine for removing loose and dead hair. An average shedding breed, this dog does not need regular bathing, only when necessary. A very clean and well kempt dog, grooming is not a big concern.
