Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen
The Petit Basset Griffon Vend?en is a Scent hound that was bred to hunt small game in bramble filled terrain of the La Vendee district of France.
History: Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen - The name of this ancient breed is a detailed description of the breed: petit means small, basset refers to its low frame, griffon means that it is rough-coated, and Vend?e is the area in France in which it originated. It is a scenthound that was bred to hunt rabbits. The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen was developed from the white St. Hubert and the white & tan Italian hound.
Appearance: The dog is bold and vivacious in character; compact, tough and robust in construction. He has an alert outlook, lively bearing and a good voice freely and purposefully used. They have short legs, a sturdy bone structure, and a thick body that is about half as much longer than it is tall at the withers. It has large eyes and an alert and intelligent expression that reveals its true nature. Its ears hang low and close to its face, and its tail is held high. The Petite Basset Griffon Vendeen is a double coat breed. The outer coat is harsh, wiry, naturally un-kept in appearance, and provides protection when hunting in thick brush. The under coat is soft, dense, and provides warmth. Allowed colors are white with any combination of tricolor, grizzle, lemon, orange or black markings.

Temperament: The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen is merry, friendly and always very busy exploring. They are very intelligent, but independent. They thrive and demand human companionship and attention. They are very intelligent, charming, and can be quite willful. This breed will typically get along with other dogs, but is not recommended for homes with cats or other household pets they will view as prey. Like other hounds, they are stubborn and don’t respond as well to training as some owners may like. They tend to do what they want to do unless there is a reward for them. The petit basset griffon Vend?en enjoys barking, digging, hunting, and exploring. It should be given lots of toys and played with frequently to prevent boredom that may result in destructive behavior.
Health: The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen has a strong constitution, and they are a very healthy breed with relatively few genetic diseases. Some lines are susceptible to Hip dysplasia, Luxating patella, or Heart Murmurs. They are prone to yeast infections in the ears.
Life expectancy: 11 – 14 years
Grooming: A weekly brushing will remove loose and dead hair and help to control shedding. Brush its teeth, trim its nails and remove excess hair from its ears. Bathe him as needed. Properly groomed, they shed little to no hair. Nails need to be clipped regularly. Ear canals should be kept free of excess hair and wax.
