The Papillon is a small dog breed with distinctive large, fringed ears that earned it its name, the French word for butterfly. The Papillon is believed to be one of the oldest of the toy breeds.
History: The Papillon is one of the oldest breeds of dog, with a recorded history in Europe going back nearly 700 years. Originating in France, the breed was then called the epagneul nain, or dwarf spaniel, and sported spaniel-type dropped ears. It was very popular with the European aristocracy. The dog was later known as the Continental Toy Spaniel (or sometimes just toy spaniel), and this tiny breed is recognizable in 13th through 15th century Italian frescoes.
Appearance: The Papillon is a small, friendly, elegant toy dog of fine-boned structure, light, dainty and of lively action; distinguished from other breeds by its beautiful butterfly-like ears. The papillon’s gait is quick and graceful, and its expression is alert. The Papillon’s muzzle is short and a bit pointed. The coat is abundant, long, fine, silky, flowing, straight with resilient quality, flat on back and sides of body. A profuse frill on chest. There is no undercoat. The dog should be white with patches of any color. A color other than white should cover both eyes and both ears back to front.
Size: Height: dogs - 8-11 inches
Weight: 9-10 pounds
Temperament: The papillon is friendly, playful, intelligent and obedient. It is a gentle and affectionate dog, lively, vivacious and charming. Nevertheless, they are a sturdy and hardy breed. They are highly energetic and athletic, but are also calm and patient. A steady and obedient breed, the Papillon does well with older considerate children. They may display possessiveness of their owner. The Papillon is quick to alert their family to danger or visitors, and may have a propensity to bark at all sights and sounds. Some papillons can be timid or nervous. Occasionally difficult to housebreak, it is otherwise easy to train. It loves to be cuddled and to romp outdoors. The breed’s talents include watchdogging, agility, competitive obedience and performing tricks.
Health: The Papillon is a fairly healthy breed, but like all dog breeds there are some health problems which are prevalent. These include: Luxating patella, von Willebrand’s disease, PRA, cataracts.
Life expectancy: 12 - 15 years
Grooming: Daily combing and brushing of the long, silky, single coat is important and fairly straightforward. These dogs are usually clean and odorless, so they should only be bathed when necessary. Dry shampooing will typically suffice. Footpads must be trimmed to prevent splaying of the feet.
