The Old English Sheepdog, also known as the Bobtail, was created in the 19th century as a herding dog. Today the OES is mainly used as a companion dog though some continue to work as herding dogs.
History: Originating 200 years ago in England’s West Country, the Old English sheepdog was first known only as “The Shepherd’s Dog.” When the sheep were sheared in the spring, the dog was lined up with them and garments were made from its hair. The breed was brought across the Atlantic in the 1880’s and the Bobtails were shown at some of the first sanctioned dog shows in the United States. It wasn’t however, until 1921 that fanciers put on their first specialty show.
Appearance: The Old English Sheepdog is a strong, compact, square proportioned and balanced dog. Its unusual topline, which slopes down from loin to withers, is a distinguishing breed characteristic. The large, rather square head is covered with hair and has a well-defined stop. Eyes are blue or brown or one of each, and its distinct bark is low-pitched. The ears are medium sized and carried flat to the side of the head. The dog is either born without a tail or has it completely removed after birth. The Old English Sheepdog has a rather long double coat. Outer coat should be coarse and harsh, sometimes wiry, while the undercoat should be soft, downy and wavy. Coat should be fluffy, yet not too, giving the dog the appearance of being overweight. Colors are any shade of gray, grizzle, blue or blue merle, with or without white markings.
Size: Height: dogs - 22-24 inches (56-61 cm); bitches 20-22 inches (51 cm)
Weight: dogs - from 65 pounds (29 kg); bitches from 60 pounds (27 kg)
Temperament: The Old English Sheepdog is a gentle, loving and lovable teddy bear. This intelligent breed displays no signs of aggression or shyness. It is very good with children, although perhaps a bit rambunctious for the youngest. The dog will occasionally attempt to herd the children with gentle bumping. The Old English Sheepdog likes to stick close to home; they make good couch potatoes! It is very much part of the family but also wants some time alone. They can be strong-willed, so this breed needs firm training. These dogs are tender and catch on quickly to things like boundaries and little things such as doing a trick for a treat. These animals are gentle with other dogs and are always willing to play.
Health: This breed is generally healthy but still watch for cataracts, PRA, hip dysplasia, thyroid disorders, Sebaceous Adenitis, deafness. Also they are prone IMHA (Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia).
Life expectancy: 10-12 years
Grooming: Coat of this breed must be brushed down to the undercoat to prevent tangles or matting. Brushing and combing regularly will keep the coat soft and tangle free. Trim around the eyes and rear-end with blunt-nosed scissors. Some people save their Old English Sheepdog’s hair from grooming and have spun it into yarn.
Puppy price: $500.00 - $1.500.00
