Norwich Terrier
The Norwich Terrier is the smallest of the terriers which was bred to hunt small mammals considered to be vermin.
History: The breed has existed since at least the late 1800s, as working terrier of East Anglia, England. Evidence suggests that at that time, near Cambridge, England, Irish and Yorkshire terriers were crossed to produce a small, red, and often black and tan, ratter, the Cantab Terrier. Later called the Trumpington Terrier, the breed was popularized by Cambridge University students, among whom it became a fad. The name Norwich Terrier is the legacy of one prodigious Trumpington named Rags.
Appearance: The Norwich Terrier, spirited and stocky with sensitive prick ears and a slightly foxy expression, is one of the smallest working terriers. Its sturdy body has strong-boned legs that give it tremendous propulsion. It has large, solid teeth in a fox-like muzzle. The eyes are small, dark and oval shaped with black rims and are placed well apart with a bright and keen expression. The ears are of medium size and erect, set well apart with pointed tips and are upright when alert. Hard, wiry and straight, lying close to the body with a definite undercoat. The coat on neck and shoulders forms a protective mane. The hair on head, ears and muzzle, except for slight eyebrows and whiskers, is short and smooth. Colors are red, wheaten, tan, black and tan, and grizzle. Occasional white markings are undesirable.
Size: Height: 10 inches (25cm)
Weight: 10-12 pounds (4.5-5.5kg)
Temperament: The nature of this little hunting dog is spunky and lovable. It is courageous, loyal and affectionate. The Norwich is easy to train, if given consistent rules, but is sometimes difficult to housebreak. The Norwich Terrier is extremely intelligent. Although they prefer human companions and are good with well-behaved children, they are accepting of other dogs. However, they may view cats as prey, so must be introduced to them at an early age. Norwich are not given to unnecessary barking but they will warn of a stranger approaching.
Health: The breed is long-lived and hardy, but some dogs may suffer from heart murmurs, hip dysplasia, eye disorders, epilepsy. Norwiches are tick magnets. it is important to use Frontline or other measures to prevent tick and flea infestations. It is also important to give a heartworm preventative like Interceptor Norwiches should never be off leash or not in a properly fenced area. The number one killer of Norwiches is being hit by a car.
Life expectancy: 13-15 years
Grooming: The shaggy, medium-length, waterproof coat is relatively easy to care for, but daily combing and brushing is important. Professional stripping of dead hairs at least twice-yearly is encouraged. They are light shedders and require little clipping.
Puppy price: $900.00 - $2.500.00
