Miniature SchnauzerThe Miniature Schnauzer is a breed of small dog of the Schnauzer type. In fact, it is the smallest of the three varieties of Schnauzers. Its primary purpose was to be a ratter, but they were also used as guard dogs and were found to be very loving household companions.
History: The Miniature Schnauzer was first exhibited as a distinct breed in 1899 in Germany. By 1933, it had been recognized by the AKC. The Miniature Schnauzer is reportedly a result of crosses between the Standard Schnauzer, the Affenpinscher and perhaps the Poodle. All of the schnauzers are so called after one particular dog, named Schnauzer, exhibited twenty years prior to the development of the miniature. The German word schnauze means, “muzzle,” giving an apt appellation to a breed with a distinguishing bushy beard.
Appearance: The Miniature Schnauzer is a small, squarely-proportioned dog with a long head, strong muzzle and well arched neck. Eyes - Small, dark brown and deep-set. They are oval in appearance and keen in expression. The v-shaped ears fold forward when left natural or are cropped to a point and stand erect. The Miniature’s gait displays both good reach and strong propulsion. Their coats are wiry, and do not shed, which adds to their appeal as house pets. The AKC recognizes only three colors: black, salt and pepper, and black and silver.
Size: Height: 12-14 inches (30-36cm)
Weight: 10-15 pounds (5-7kg)
Temperament: Miniature Schnauzers are known for their friendly personality and mischievous sense of humor, as well as intelligence and energy. They are very loyal and protective of their owners. The Miniature Schnauzer demands time and companionship from its owner. It can be feisty and fairly dog-aggressive - putting on a show of superiority without necessarily intending to fight. The miniature is responsive to command but can develop a stubborn streak if not well-trained. Miniature schnauzers adore children, get along well with other pets if properly socialized and make excellent companions for attentive caregivers.
Health: This is usually a healthy breed. Although are prone to diabetes, bladder stones, cataracts, kidney stones, pancreatitis, myotonia congeneta. Miniature Schnauzers with uncropped ears are prone to ear infections and deafness later in life if the ears are not checked regularly or dried out after swimming.
Life expectancy: 12 - 14 years
Grooming: The wiry coat is reasonably easy to look after, but unless it is combed or brushed daily with a short wire brush, it will become matted. Clip out any knots. The animal should be clipped all over to an even length twice a year, in spring and fall, but this is a job best left to an expert. Trim around the eyes and ears with blunt-nosed scissors and clean the whiskers after meals.
Puppy price: $300.00 - $1.000.00
