The Maine Coon is one of the largest breeds of domestic cat, known for its intelligence and playfulness as well as its distinctive physical appearance. The breed is one of the oldest natural breeds in North America and originated from New England.
History: The Maine Coon Cat originates from Maine in the United States most northeastern state. This cat is one of the longest recognized breeds of cats. The true source of the breed is speculated to be from the arrival of the Pilgrims in the 1600s that traveled from New England to North America. By the 1950s the Maine Coon Cat started gaining recognition again and in 1976 they acquired championship level. The Maine Coon Cat pedigree is the second most popular in the United States. The Maine Coon Cats can be found all over the world.
Appearance: Maine Coons are very big and energetic cats, with powerful muscular bodies and substantial legs. The muzzle is square with a firm chin and the chin, upper lip and nose leather should fall in the same vertical line. Maine coons have very large oversized ears, which are tipped at the end with fur. This is a very common trait of a Maine Coon, giving them their Lynx like appearance. The most common color in the breed is brown with tabby markings. Maine Coons are recognized in all colors. The coat is semi long and thick and consists of an undercoat covered by a substantial glossy top coat.
Size: Weight – male: 13-20 lb (6-9 kg)

Temperament: Maine Coons have a sweet nature. Maine Coons are a breed distinguished by intelligence and adroitness. They are very playful and friendly. They enjoy human company. Possibly due to their modest origins they are used to sleeping rough and are often found curled up in the strangest of places. Maine Coons are usually not “lap” cats (possibly because of their large size), and thus are generally not comfortable sitting on a person’s lap or chest. In general Maine Coon cats are companions rather than pets. Maine Coons are noted for the delightful quiet chirping sound they make. Maine Coons can be very dog-like in their behavior. Some Maine Coons enjoy playing with, but not usually in, water.
Health: The Maine Coon is a robust, healthy cat and suffers from no specific health problems but as with all domestic cats it is advisable for them to have an annual health check from the age of about eight or nine. Nevertheless, some potential health problems as hip dysplasia, Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and polycystic kidney disease can befound in this breed.
