Keeshond
The Keeshond is a medium-sized dog with a plush two-layer coat of silver and black fur with a ‘ruff’ and a curled tail, originating in the Netherlands. Its closest relative is the Pomeranian.
History: In the eighteenth century the Keeshond was known as “a dog of the people.” In its veins runs the blood of the Samoyed, Chow Chow, Elkhound, and Pomeranian. At the beginning of the French Revolution, it became the symbol of the common and middle-class Dutchmen who were led by the patriot Kees de Gyselaer. The breed then suffered a long period of neglect. They were first introduced into the UK by Mrs. Wingfield-Digby and did not become popular again until 1920, when it arrived in the US.
Appearance: The Keeshond is a natural, handsome dog of well-balanced, short-coupled body. His rump and hind legs, down to the hocks, are thickly coated, forming the characteristic “trousers.” Keeshonds  have a wedge shaped head, a medium-length muzzle with a definite stop, small pointed ears and an expressive face. Eyes should be dark brown in color, of medium size, almond shaped, set obliquely and neither too wide apart nor too close together. Eye rims are black. The tail should be moderately long and well feathered, set on high and tightly curled over the back. It should lie flat and close to the body. They have a cream or pale gray undercoat and a luxurious outer coat that comes in shades of gray with black tips and stands away from the body.
Size: Height: Dogs 17-19 inches (44-48cm); bitches are 10% less.
Weight: some sources say 55-66 pounds (25-30kg) while others say 35-45 pounds (15-20 kg.)
Temperament: An excellent children’s companion, lively, intelligent, and very alert. Keeshonden can be stubborn, but they are quick learners and eager to please. They thrive on human companionship. They are empathic and intuitive, and are frequently used as therapy dogs. They have a loud distinctive bark and make good watchdogs. The Keeshond is loyal and full of personality. They are neither timid nor aggressive.
Health: Keeshonden are prone to hip dysplasia, luxating patellas (trick knee), epilepsy, Cushing’s disease, hyperparathyroidism, hypothyroidism and von Willebrand’s disease. Keeshonden are also prone to bloat.
Life expectancy: About 12-15 years
Grooming: Grooming is not as troublesome as you might expect, but daily brushing of the long coat with a stiff bristle brush is important. Brush with the grain first, then lift the hair with a comb, against the grain, lay it back in place. Bathe or dry shampoo only when necessary. The dense undercoat is shed heavily twice a year in spring and fall. Beware of overfeeding, for the Keeshond will gain weight easily.
Puppy price: $400.00 - $1.200.00
