The Italian Greyhound is a small breed of dog, specifically a member of the sight hound family and member of the toy group.
History: Originating in Egypt more than 2,000 years ago, this very unique breed is considered to be the smallest of the Greyhound breeds. The breed is thought to have resulted from mating small Greyhounds. It’s small stature and high-stepping gait caught the eye of Roman nobility after it was brought to Italy by Roman soldiers. This diminutive dog was so revered by the ancient Romans that plaques have been uncovered in the ruins of Pompeii inscribed with ‘Cave Canem’, which is though to mean ‘Watch out, don’t step on the Italian Greyhound.’
Appearance: The Italian Greyhound is very similar to the Greyhound, but much smaller and more slender in all proportions and of ideal elegance and grace. The head is narrow with a very fine muzzle and ears are softly folded and set high on the head. The eyes dark, bright, intelligent, medium in size. Very light eyes are a fault. The Italian Greyhound has a very beautiful coat that consists of short and fine hair. The skin of this breed should always be supple while the hair should be short and glossy, much like satin. The hair should always be soft to the touch, never coarse. The coat can be black, fawn, red, cream or blue. The coat can have white markings at the chest and feet. Brindle coats and black and tan coats are not allowed in show dogs.
Size: Height: 12-15 inches (30-38 cm.)
Weight: 6-10 pounds (3-5 kg.)
There are two weight varieties: 8 pounds (4 kg.) maximum, and over 8 pounds (4 kg.).
Temperament: The Italian Greyhound is a gentle, submissive and affectionate dog. It tends to be friendly and can be very showy in the ring as it is not shy with strangers. Italian Greyhounds make wonderful companions, especially for a family. However, they should never be placed in a home with small children. This breed is so sensitive and can be very timid that small children that pester will be sure to make this dog extremely timid. The Italian Greyhound does fairly well around other dogs, but does best in a home with other Italian Greyhounds as this breed does not do well around large and more dominant dogs.
Health: The Italian Greyhound is hardier than it appears. The adult dog is certainly not delicate but until they are about eighteen months old, their bones are quite fragile and they can break a leg rather easily. Italian Greyhounds are prone to slipped stifle, fractures, PRA and epilepsy. Bitches whelp easily and are well-suited to motherhood.
Life expectancy: 9-15 years
Grooming: The Italian Greyhound needs very little coat care as it has such a short coat. All that is needed to keep the fine, silky coat gleaming is a rubdown with a piece of toweling or chamois. Only bathe when absolutely necessary. After bathing make sure the dogs is thoroughly dry and warm. The teeth of this breed should be brushed on a regular basis to prevent tartar buildup and/or gum disease. Italian Greyhounds should be protected from the cold and should have their nails clipped at least once every two weeks.
