The Irish Wolfhound is a breed of hound (a sighthound), bred to hunt. The name originates from its purpose rather than from its appearance: To hunt wolves. These dogs are the tallest breed of dog in the world.
History: Their ancestors were the Cu, a massive shaggy-coated dog used for the pursuit of wolves, elk and wild boar. Irish Wolfhounds were often given as royal presents and eventually became such popular gifts that Oliver Cromwell had to stop their export from Britain. The last wolf was killed in Scotland in the early eighteenth century, and the Wolfhound disappeared from Ireland in 1766. This breed was later brought back to Ireland by the Romans.
Appearance: The Irish Wolfhound should have a large head with a long muzzle. The eyes should be oval and dark in colour. The ears are carried back against the head except when the animal is excited, when they my prick up part-way. The front legs should straight, strong and muscular, the back legs, strong, muscular and long.. The Irish Wolfhound is a large breed with a medium length coat. The coat should always be rough and hard on the body, legs and top of the head. The hair around the eyes and muzzle should be wiry and slightly longer. Colors include gray, brindle, red, black or white. Gray is the most common color.

Temperament: The Irish Wolfhound is a friendly, loyal dog with a laid back outlook on life who rarely barks. Dignified and willing, they are unconditionally loyal to their owner and family. Affectionate, sweet natured, and well mannered, this breed makes a great companion. The Irish Wolfhound is very loyal and dignified. He quickly bonds with his family and does very well with other dogs and cats if he is properly socialized around them. Not a guard dog by nature, but may be a deterrent simply due to his size. They tend to greet everyone as a friend, so do not count on them being a watch dog. The Irish Wolfhound has average intelligence, but is eager to learn and can prove easy to train.
Health: These dogs are prone to cardiomyopathy, bone cancer, bloat, PRA, Von Willebrands, and hip dysplasia.
Life expectancy: 7-10 years
Grooming: They do need regular grooming with brush and comb to keep the coat in good condition and it may be necessary to hand pluck them twice a year when they start to shed the dead hair.
