The Havanese is a member of the Bichon family of dogs, which also includes the Bichon Frise, the Bichon Bolognese, Maltese, Coton De Tulear, Tsvetnaya Bolonka, Franzuskaya Bolonka and possibly the L?wchen breeds.
History: The Havanese was originated in the Mediterranean. It is thought that ancestors of the Havanese may have traveled to Cuba at the time that the Spanish were exploring the Caribbean. It may also be that the Havanese is a cross between the Bolognese and a small Poodle.
Appearance: The Havanese is a small sturdy dog of immense charm. He is slightly longer than tall. Head is medium length proportionate to the size of the body. Eyes are large, almond shaped and very dark with a gentle expression. Ears are set neither too high nor too low and are dropped, forming a gentle fold and cove red with long feathering. They are slightly raised, moderately pointed, neither fly-away nor framing the cheeks. Skull is broad and somewhat rounded with a moderate stop. Tail is carried up over the back when gaiting. The non-shedding coat is long, soft and wispy with tufts or curls at the ends. The breed comes in a rainbow of colors, from white to shades of cream, champagne, gold, black, blue, silver, chocolate or any combination of these.

Temperament: The Havanese is playful and alert. The Havanese is both trainable and intelligent with a sweet, non-quarrelsome disposition. Havanese are natural companion dogs: gentle and responsive. They become very attached to their human families and are excellent with children. Clever and active, they will often solicit attention by performing tricks. The Havanese are good watch dogs who will alert their family to danger or visitors. They will look to their family for reassurance before welcoming strangers. Once they befriend someone they are friends for life.
Health: Havanese are generally considered healthy and sturdy dogs. Neverthless, all long-lived breeds eventually have health problems. Some are prone to PRA, cataracts, luxating patellas, poodle eye and dry skin.
Life expectancy: about 12-16 years
Grooming: The Havanese require brushing and combing a minimum of two times per week although the coat may be clipped for easier care. It is important to check the eyes and ears regularly and keep them clean. They are susceptible to genetic eye disease and ear infections. Clip excess hair from between the pads of the feet. The feet themselves may be clipped to look round.
