Great Pyrenees
The Great Pyrenees, is a large, Majestic breed of dog that was used traditionally for protecting livestock (especially sheep) in pasture.
History: Also known as the Pyrenean Mountain Dog, the Great Pyrenees or “Pyr” descends from the Molossian hounds that date back to ancient Roman times, brought to Spain by the Romans, where the breed became well established in the Pyrenean Mountains on the border between France and Spain.
Appearance: Full grown this is a very large animal with a solid muscular body. The head is wedge-shaped with a slightly rounded skull with no apparent stop. The eyes are medium sized, almond shaped, set slightly obliquely, rich dark brown. The ears are small to medium in size, V-shaped with rounded tips, set on at eye level, normally carried low, flat, and close to the head. A scissor bite is preferred, but a level bite is acceptable. The Great Pyrenees has a beautiful solid white double coat. The outercoat must be coarse and long, and is either straight or very slightly wavy. The undercoat should be thick and soft, somewhat like cotton. Coat colors come in solid white, or white with patches of tan, wolf-gray or pale yellow.
Size: Height: Dogs 27-32 inches (69-81cm); bitches 25-29 inches (63-74cm) are the average heights, but some Pyrenees are as much as 40 inches (1 meter)
Weight: Dogs from 100 pounds (45kg); bitches from 85 pounds (38kg)
Temperament: The Great Pyrenees is a capable and imposing guardian, devoted to its family, and somewhat wary of strangers - human or canine. They are often used to guard livestock. When not provoked, it is calm, well- mannered, and somewhat serious. They are very intelligent dogs that are easy to train with the proper technique. However, they are sometimes stubborn and independent. Basically well mannered and affectionate, this breed does do well for companion purposes but shows his true colors in a country environment.
Health: Prone to hip dysplasia. Can develop skin problems in very hot weather.
Life expectancy: about 10 years
Grooming: The coat needs daily brushing to keep it clean, shiny and tangle free. Great Pyrenees tend to shed a lot, so a good vacuum cleaner or an easygoing attitude towards housekeeping is essential to owning one of these wonderful dogs. Occasional baths are acceptable. These dogs shed heavily once a year.
Puppy price: $ 200.00 - $ 800.00
