Gordon Setter
Gordon Setters are a medium sized breed of dog, a member of the setter family that also includes the more common Irish Setters and English Setters and the less-common Irish Red and White Setter. While the purposes of the three breeds are similar, there are many distinctions that make each of the four setters physically and behaviourally unique.
History: Originally developed during the 1600’s in Scotland, the Gordon Setter became popular for their excellent hunting abilities. They received their name from the 4th Duke of Gordon who officially established this breed. They are the only Scottish gundog bred specifically to hunt game birds. Their endurance and stamina makes them capable of hunting in adverse weather, in water, and on land.
Appearance: The Gordon Setter is a good-sized, sturdily built, black and tan dog, well muscled, with plenty of bone and substance, but active, upstanding and stylish, appearing capable of doing a full day’s work in the field. The head is long, chiseled and massive, with a very pronounced stop and a large-nostrilled black nose. The long muzzle is squared-off, not pointed and should be approximately the same length from nose to stop as the skull from stop to occiput. The teeth may meet in a scissors or level bite, but a scissors bite is preferred. The Gordon Setter has a beautiful coat that is of medium-length. It is silky, glossy, and soft. The coat color of the Gordon Setter is always black with clearly defined tan markings.
Size: Height: Dogs 24-27 inches (61-69 cm); bitches 23-26 inches (58-66 cm)
Weight: Dogs 55-80 pounds (25-36 kg); bitches 45-70 pounds (20-32 kg)
Temperament: Setters are often said to be stupid. In reality, however, they are very intelligent in being able to figure out how to get out of enclosures and the like. This breed is polite, affectionate, and cheerful. They are also sociable, friendly, and sensitive. An intensely devoted companion, the Gordon Setter is a wonderful family dog. Very loyal to the family, but tends to be reserved with strangers. It may become jealous of other pets, but is generally good with them. It should be remembered that a Gordon is more strong willed than other hunting breeds and will need firm and consistent training.
Health: They are prone to bloat, hip dysplasia and eye deseases such as progressive retinal atrophy, and cataracts.
Life expectancy: about 10-12 years
Grooming: As a semi-long coated dog, the Gordon needs to be brushed and combed regularly, at least twice a week. The ears should also be cleaned on a regular basis since they are long and pendulous, - the type that traps in air and can lead to infections. It is important to check for burrs and tangles, and to give extra care when the dog is shedding its coat. Bathe or dry shampoo only when necessary. Trim the hair on the bottom of the feet and keep the nails clipped.
Puppy price: $ 300.00 - $ 700.00
