German Shepherd Dog
The German Shepherd Dog or Alsatian is a breed of dog. Because they are eager to please, they are easily trained in obedience and protection. German Shepherd Dogs are often used as working dogs in many capacities, including search and rescue (SAR) dogs, military dogs, police dogs, or guard dogs. They are also used as assistance dogs (particularly guide dogs), though not as much as Labrador Retrievers and Golden Retrievers.
History: This breed was developed in the 19th century by Max Von Stephanitz who is considered to be the father of the German Shepherd. Revered for their versatility as companion and for their dedication to work, this breed has the distinction of being the first dog ever used as a guide for the blind. Today the German Shepherd is one of the most popular breeds in the world.
Appearance: The first impression of a good German Shepherd Dog is that of a strong, agile, well muscled animal, alert and full of life. It is well balanced, with harmonious development of the forequarter and hindquarter. It has a sturdy, muscular, slightly elongated body with a light but solid bone structure. Its head should be in proportion to its body. It has a strong scissors bite, ears wide at the base, pointed, upright, and turned forward. The coat most often comes in black with tan, sable or all black, but also can come in blue, liver and white.
Size: Height - Dogs 24-26 inches; bitches 22-24 inches
Weight –  75-95 pounds
Temperament: Considered to be one of the most intelligent dog breeds, the German shepherd is famous for its loyalty and courage. The well-bred German Shepherd Dog is stable, sensible, intelligent, quick to learn and protective of his home and property. This dog adores its family and is wary of strangers, making it an excellent watchdog and guard dog. It only barks when it feels it is necessary, alerting its family of something out of the ordinary. They will most generally get along with other household pets they have been raised with. This breed will attempt to perform the task of herding on anything and everything that moves. The German Shepherd is not recommended for the novice, apathetic, or sedentary owner.
Health: German Shepherds are prone to elbow and hip dysplasia. Other health problems sometimes occurring in the breed are von Willebrand’s disease, skin allergies, epilepsy, digestive problems. German Shepherds are also prone to bloat.
Life expectancy: around 13 years
Grooming: The double coat of the German shepherd requires regular brushing because it sheds bits of hair all the time. Seasonally, it sheds heavily. The coat should be brushed once or twice a week unless dog hair in the home is a problem which then a quick daily brushing is suggested. Bathing should only be done when absolutely necessary using a mild shampoo to preserve the integrity of the coat. This is a shedding dog but the more you groom it, the less it will shed.
Puppy price: $ 400.00 - $ 4.000.00
