The Field Spaniel is a medium-sized breed of dog. It is one of several spaniel breeds, which can serve as gundogs.
History: Descended through careful and selective breeding of the English Cocker Spaniel, the Field Spaniel’s country of origin is England. During the 1800’s this breed nearly became extinct due to poor breeding practices. However, by the 1920’s they were re-developed into an extremely fine bird dog. Due to the immense popularity of the Springer and Cocker Spaniels, the Field Spaniel is quite rare in the United States.
Appearance: It is a well balanced, substantial hunter-companion of medium size, built for activity and endurance in a heavy cover and water. The front legs are well-boned and straight. The head is in proportion to the rest of the dog. The long, wide ears are pendulous and rounded at the end, hanging close to the head. The long, lean muzzle is strong and features a large nose with open nostrils. The tail can be docked or left in its natural state The Field Spaniel has a coat of moderate length. It is either flat, or may be slightly wavy. The most common coat color is black, but may also come in liver, mahogany red, or golden liver. Tan markings or speckles may also be present.
Size: Height – Average 18 inches (46 cm)
Weight – 35-50 pounds (16-22 kg)
Temperament: Unusually docile, sensitive, funloving, independent and intelligent, with a great affinity for human companionship. It is an affectionate breed that makes a wonderful family pet. This breed has a tendency to be reserved with strangers, but generally loves everyone. Field Spaniels do have a tendency to become overly attached to one specific family member and will ignore all others. They thrive on human companionship and interaction and will become neurotic if deprived of this. With their retrieving nature, this breed loves to carry objects around in their mouths.
Health: The Field Spaniel is prone to such health issues as hip dysplasia, thyroid disease, ear infections, and eye problems.
Life expectancy: 12 – 14 years
Grooming: Field Spaniels require combing and brushing at least twice weekly. Professional trimming is suggested two to four times a year to keep straggly hair under control. Check and clean the ears on a regular basis.
