The English Setter is a breed of dog. It is part of the Setter family, which includes red Irish Setters, Irish Red and White Setters, and black Gordon Setters.
History: The English Setter originated in France in 1500 by crossing the Spanish Pointer and the French Pointer. The breed was then brought to Great Britain where it was perfected by a breed named Sir Edward Laverack. He developed the English Setter from early French hunting dogs in the early 1800’s. They were not used for hunting purposes until another English breeder, Llewellin, created a hunting strain of the English Setters. Today, they are still used as gundogs, but they are also one of the more popular show breeds.
Appearance: An elegant, substantial and symmetrical gun dog suggesting the ideal blend of strength, stamina, grace, and style. The front legs are straight and parallel, while the hind legs have wide, muscular thighs. It features a long, square muzzle with a dark nose and wide, large nostrils. The round, dark eyes are bright and rather large, offering an intelligent, mild expression. The long hair is flat, silky and a bit wavy. The coat comes in white with blue, lemon, orange, or brown speckling. Some dogs are tri-color (blue, white and brown).
Size: Height – Dogs 24-27 inches (61-69 cm); bitches 23-26 inches (58-66 cm)
Weight – Dogs 55-80 pounds (25-36 kg); bitches 45-70 pounds (20-32 kg)
Temperament: A lively dog that enjoys hunting and running, the English setter is also known to be a gentle, friendly dog. They are energetic, people-oriented dogs, so are well suited to families who can give them attention and activity, or to working with a hunter, where they have a job to do. It is generally not shy around strangers. This is an affectionate dog that loves to be with its family.
Health: A relatively healthy breed, Setters have few genetic problems but some problems occasionally occur. Canine hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, and canine hypothyroidism are some of the more well-known ailments that can affect this dog. Be careful not to overfeed this breed for they tend to gain weight easily. English Setter bitches are prone to false pregnancies.
Life expectancy: 10-14 years
Grooming: Regular combing and brushing of the soft, flat, medium-length coat is all that is required to keep it in excellent condition. The dog should be bathed only when necessary. Be sure to trim the hair on the feet and tail on a regular basis to avoid matting.
