A Dandie Dinmont Terrier is a small breed of dog in the terrier family. The breed has a very long body, short legs, and a distinctive “top-knot” of hair on the head.
History: Unusual in its appearance, the Dandie Dinmont Terrier is a distinct type of terrier that first appeared in the 18th century in the border area of England and Scotland. It is said that this breed was owned by farmers and gypsies and that it was used to kill vermin, such as rodents, as well as otters, badgers, and fox. This dog was also known in the early days as Catcleugh, Hindlee or pepper and mustard terriers.
Appearance: the Dandie Dinmont Terrier is a long, low-stationed working terrier with a curved outline. The distinctive head with silken topknot is large but in proportion to the size of the dog. The dark eyes are large and round with a soft, wise expression. The sturdy, flexible body and scimitar shaped tail are covered with a rather crisp double coat, either mustard or pepper in color. Peppered ranges from dark bluish black to a light silvery gray, the topknot is a silvery white. Mustard can range from a reddish brown to a pale fawn, with the topknot a creamy white.
Size: Height 8 – 11 inches (20-28 cm)
Weight 18-24 pounds (8-11 kg)
Temperament: An affectionate and fun-loving dog, the Dandie Dinmont can be a loyal companion. It is an intelligent and independent breed that can be reserved around strangers and aggressive with strange dogs, especially male Dandies. It is not particularly difficult to train, but it is known for its stubborn streak. It is an active dog that can be a wonderful addition to the family.
Health: It is a healthy breed, although hypothyroidism is not uncommon in the older dog. A few lines have had incidences of glaucoma and epilepsy. Dogs that are overweight and unexercised can have back problems.
Life expectancy: 11-13 years
Grooming: The unusual coat of the Dandie Dinmont requires regular grooming. It should be combed with a pin brush at least twice a week, and regular scissoring and shaping is advised. If not properly groomed, the loose hair will tend to mat.
