Bullmastiff
The Bullmastiff is powerfully built and symmetrical, showing great strength, but not cumbersome; it is sound and active.
History: Developed in the late nineteenth century by crossing the Mastiff with the Bulldog. He was breed to combine power, speed and a keen sense of smell with the courage and aggression of a bulldog. In 1924 he was standardized and was officially recognized in England.
Appearance: Bullmastiffs have very dark brown, medium size eyes. Their ears are triangular shaped and are set wide on the skull but are carried close to the cheek. They have a large skull which wrinkles when they are alert. Their muzzle is broad with a dark nose. Their neck is slightly arched and very muscular as is the rest of their body. The tapering tail is set high and reaches to the hocks. Their legs are straight and set far apart with medium sized feet and round toes. The short, slightly rough coat comes in brindle, fawn, or red, often with black markings on the head.
Size: Height – Dogs 25-27 inches (63-69 cm); bitches 24-26 inches (61-66 cm)
Weight – Dogs 110-133 pounds (50-60 kg); bitches 100-120 pounds (45-54 kg)
Temperament: The Bullmastiff is courageous, loyal, calm, and loving with those it knows. It has a very strong protective instinct and will defend its people against anything it perceives as a threat. They crave human attention and are very affectionate with their owners. They can be aggressive towards other animals so they need to be socialized early. They also need a firm handler who can make sure that they are in charge of the household.
Health: Prone to cancer. Beware of hip dysplasia, tumors and some eyelid problems. They are also prone to boils on the lips and PRA (eyes). These dogs tend to bloat. It is a good idea to feed them two or three meals a day instead of one large meal.
Life expectancy: under 10 years
Grooming: The short-haired, slightly rough coat is easy to groom. Comb and brush with a firm bristle brush, and shampoo only when necessary. There is little shedding with this breed. Check the feet regularly because they carry a lot of weight, and trim the nails.
The Bullmastiff is a breed for an experienced handler who lives in an apartment or house. They tend to be lazy so exercise needs to be provided for them daily.
Puppy prices: $400.00-$2.500.00
