The Bulldog is a medium-sized dog breed that originated in England.
History: The Bulldog was bred in the early thirteenth century for bullfighting. This origin is responsible for the breed’s name as well as for the dog’s appearance. The short muzzle and wide lower jaw were needed for the dog to clamp itself to the bull’s nose like a vise, and the nose had to be upturned so that the dog could still breathe while clinging to the bull.
Appearance: The perfect Bulldog must be of medium size and smooth coat; with heavy, thick-set, low-slung body, massive short-faced head, wide shoulders and sturdy limbs. The ears are small, thin, and set high on the head. The huge, square jaws of this breed contain large, strong teeth. The short neck is thick and strong, arching nicely into the back. The short tail is either straight or screwed, and it is carried down. They have a short coat that is smooth to the touch. The most common colors of this dog brindle, solid white, red, fawn or brindle and piebald.
Size: Height – Dogs 22-28 inches (55-70 cm); bitches 20-26 inches (52-65 cm)
Weight – Dogs 70-120 pounds (32-54 kg); bitches 60-100 pounds (27-45 kg)
Temperament:  For a dog that once faced bulls, the Bulldog is calm and dignified with a steady, even disposition. He is resolute and courageous but not vicious or aggressive. Bulldog loves with the depth of its heart and never tires of doing things with its owners. It usually gets along well with other animals. Bulldogs are gentle and sweet dogs who love everyone. They are mellow and even tempered and make for great family pets. Though it is small, this dog makes for a great protector of his family and home. This dog will do well in any situation though they do have a few bad habits: drooling, snoring, and chronic flatulence.
Health: Bulldogs tend to have breathing problems; Other common health problems include cherry eye, allergies, and (among older bulldogs) hip problems and cataracts.
Life expectancy: 8-10 years
Grooming: The smooth, fine, short-haired coat is easy to groom. Comb and brush with a firm bristle brush and bathe only when necessary. Wipe the face with a damp close every day to clean inside the wrinkles. This breed is an average shedder.
Bulldogs will do fine in an apartment with sufficient exercise. Mainly this dog craves human attention and needs it to feel complete.
