The Black Russian Terrier is a large and powerful dog, a loyal companion that is highly intelligent and dominant in nature. Affectionately known as the “Russian Pearl,” the breed was developed in Russia in the 1950s from selected crosses of the Giant Schnauzer, Rottweiler, Newfoundland, Airedale Terrier and Ovcharka. The result was an unpretentious, highly trainable dog capable of working in various climatic conditions, with a coat that requires regular grooming. The Black Russian Terrier has large bone and well developed muscles. Dogs must have a large frame and heavy bone. Bitches are definitely to appear feminine but never lacking in substance.

Black Russian Terriers can be excellent and reliable companions with proper socialization and obedience training, but this is not a dog for the first time dog owner. They must be balanced, have a good temperament and be reliable. The dogs have great courage and strength. They are capable of endurance.
The Black Russian Terrier was bred to guard and protect. They are observant and suspicious of strangers. But, most of all, they are family dogs. Great with children and other pets. This, however, is not your run of the mill Terrier, they can get to be well over 100 pounds. The Black Russian will want to be in your house when you’re in the house or alongside you when you’re out. Socialize it early to set some standards that you can live with as the dog reaches full size (100 pound plus dogs are harder to kick out of the bed than a 20 pound puppy). It is OK for an apartment but, again, don’t lose sight of how big it will get. They enjoy exercise and games and need to be walked daily. The Black Russian should be brushed at least weekly.
